I see references in PHP code such as:

._HOMEPROBLEM.
._ADDAHOME.
._HOMEPROBLEMUSER.
._CREATEUSERDATA.

For example, ._NOADMINYET. expands into No Admin Yet.

Where are these strings defined?

I've been searching PHP manuals for information, but have not found any reference to them.

They are defined in your language files - looks like you're missing language/lang-*.php and admin/language/lang-*.php for that language
