I´m not sure, wether this is a known issue or not. I have started to experience the creation spam accounts on my site in the last few weeks. Since it has not started to be masses of them, I cannot tell at this point, if it´s an automated approach or not.
Typically what happens is, that a new account is created on the system, and a spam-thread is posted on the forum.
The Captcha is active during account creation, and the email confirmation is also necessary. Currently I´m running 7.8 with NP 3.2b from nukeresources.com.
Question: Is (or was) there a known issue with the account registration, making it possible to circumvent the above mentioned countermeasures?
I have seen indications that spammers are bypassing the CAPTCHA, esp for phpBB forums. I am not sure whether this is a vulnerability within phpBB forums but I will definitely keep on the lookout
